Position Summary

The Commonwealth's Attorney is one of five constitutional officers in Loudoun County government. The primary function of the office is to investigate and prosecute felony, misdemeanor, traffic, and juvenile criminal cases in concert with local and federal law enforcement agencies and private citizens.

This position is responsible for representing the Commonwealth in adjudications/trials, sentencing hearings, probation violation hearings, show cause hearings, and related proceedings. The attorney will manage a felony and misdemeanor caseload involving screening cases for disposition in General District Court or indictment in Circuit Court — including preparing for trial, reviewing charging and evidentiary documents, issuing subpoenas, interviewing and preparing witnesses, performing legal research, filing pre- and post-trial motions, executing trial strategy, and coordinating with victim/witness case managers.

Minimum Qualifications

• Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school
• Two (2) years of related experience as a licensed practicing attorney
• Active membership in good standing with the Virginia State Bar
• Prosecution experience preferred

Special Requirements: Must be licensed to practice law in Virginia. Candidates with the ability to obtain a waiver of admission within a reasonable time (not to exceed four months) will also be considered. Annual continuing legal education required. Successful candidates will undergo a background check.

Compensation

Salary: $88,153 – $154,268 annually, commensurate with experience
