Introduction

The Commonwealth’s Attorney is one of five constitutional officers in Loudoun County government. The primary function of the office is to investigate and prosecute felony, misdemeanor, traffic, and juvenile criminal cases in coordination with local and federal law enforcement agencies, as well as complaints from private citizens.

Job Summary

This position is responsible for representing the Commonwealth in a wide range of court proceedings, including adjudications and trials, sentencing hearings, probation violation hearings, and show cause hearings.

The attorney will manage a felony and misdemeanor caseload, including screening cases for disposition in the General District Court or indictment in the Circuit Court.

Key Responsibilities

Representation duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Preparing cases for trial
  • Reviewing charging documents and evidentiary materials
  • Issuing subpoenas
  • Interviewing and preparing witnesses
  • Conducting legal research
  • Drafting and responding to pre‑trial and post‑trial motions
  • Developing and executing trial strategy
  • Coordinating with victim/witness case managers
  • Performing other related duties as assigned

Compensation

Hiring salary is commensurate with experience.


Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school (or equivalent as provided by state law)
  • Two (2) years of related work experience as a licensed practicing attorney
  • Licensed member of the Virginia State Bar
  • Prosecution experience preferred

Job Contingencies and Special Requirements

  • Must be licensed to practice law in Virginia
  • Must be a member in good standing with the Virginia State Bar
    • Ability to obtain a waiver of admission within a reasonable time is acceptable but may not exceed four (4) months
  • Must complete continuing legal education annually
  • Successful candidates will be subject to required background checks
