About APA:

The Association of Prosecuting Attorneys (APA) is a national nonprofit organization headquartered in Washington, DC whose mission is to support prosecutors to create safer communities through a more just and equitable legal system. APA is a highly experienced leader in the field of nationwide training and technical assistance. APA’s membership includes prosecutors’ offices, elected, appointed, and line prosecutors, justice system professionals, and community partners. The Association’s staff includes experienced attorneys and subject matter experts, and its Board of Directors comprises practicing elected and appointed prosecutors. Through numerous projects, committees, advisory boards, partnerships, and collaborative efforts, APA is the national clearinghouse for innovative and effective prosecutorial practices.

Description of Duties and Responsibilities:

APA is currently accepting unpaid Legal Intern applicants on a rolling basis for the Fall 2025 semester. We are looking for candidates passionate about criminal law and improving public safety on a national scale. This internship is remote, with occasional opportunities to participate in in-person meetings or events in Washington, DC (if already based in the DMV). We have a large number of projects across various spaces in the prosecutorial field and will work with interns to place them in areas that most interest them.

The following duties and responsibilities are expected:

  • Perform legal and empirical research;
  • Assist with administrative duties as assigned;
  • Assist with social media and/or web support;
  • Assist with project management, including writing, proofreading, and the development and coordination of meetings, trainings, and conferences. Interns may also be able to attend various meetings, briefings, and conferences with a wide array of criminal and social justice organizations, some legislative bodies, and personnel; and
  • Participate in webinars related to prosecutors and criminal justice issues.

Requirements:

  • Open to 1L-3L students
  • Must be a law student currently enrolled at an ABA-accredited school or a recent law school graduate

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

  • Strong writing, research, and analytical skills;
  • Interest in criminal law and policy;
  • The ability to work independently;
  • The ability to work well with people of diverse educational, cultural and professional backgrounds; and
  • Flexibility to do a variety of tasks required for the successful completion of project deliverables.

Internship Duration & Time Commitment:

The internship typically runs from September through December. Interns are expected to commit approximately 10–15 hours per week, with flexibility to accommodate academic schedules.

Supervision & Mentorship:

Interns will be supervised by experienced attorneys and have opportunities for mentorship from APA staff and leadership.

Learning Outcomes:

Interns will develop practical legal research and writing skills, gain exposure to national criminal justice policy work, and build professional connections in the prosecutorial and public safety fields.

Academic Credit:

APA is happy to work with your law school to ensure the internship meets academic credit requirements.

Technology Requirements:

Interns must have access to a reliable internet connection and a computer capable of running standard office and video conferencing software.
