Position Summary

The City of Tumwater, Washington is seeking an Assistant City Attorney for this vibrant community of 28,000 residents located about 60 miles south of Seattle, adjacent to the state capital of Olympia. Tumwater offers the amenities of a larger metropolitan area with the character and accessibility of a smaller community. One of Washington's oldest cities, Tumwater grew around the Deschutes River and its three waterfalls, which powered early industry and remain defining features of the city today.

The City of Tumwater was incorporated in 1869 and operates under a Mayor-Council form of government, serving 28,000 residents across 14.5 square miles with a 2025–2026 biennial budget of $341 million and 253 FTEs across 11 departments. The City Attorney's Office provides comprehensive legal services to the Mayor, City Council, boards, commissions, and staff; represents the City and its officials in legal proceedings; reviews contracts, agreements, ordinances, resolutions, and other legal documents; and oversees the City's risk management program. The office operates with a City Attorney, Assistant City Attorney, and Paralegal. All prosecution services are provided by contract with the Thurston County Prosecuting Attorney's Office.

Compensation
