About APA
The Association of Prosecuting Attorneys (APA) is a national nonprofit headquartered in Arlington, VA. Our mission is to support prosecutors in creating safer communities through a fair and effective legal system. APA is a recognized leader in nationwide training and technical assistance, serving prosecutors’ offices, elected and appointed prosecutors, justice system professionals, and community partners. Our team includes experienced attorneys and subject matter experts, and our Board of Directors comprises practicing prosecutors. Through projects, committees, advisory boards, and partnerships, APA acts as the national clearinghouse for innovative prosecutorial practices.
Position Overview
APA is accepting applications for unpaid Legal Internships for the Spring 2026 semester. This is a remote position, with occasional opportunities to attend in-person meetings or events in Washington, DC (for interns based in the DMV area only). Interns will work on a variety of projects in the prosecutorial field and will be matched to areas aligned with their interests.
Responsibilities
Interns will:
- Conduct legal and empirical research
- Assist with administrative tasks as needed
- Support social media and/or website content
- Contribute to project management, including writing, proofreading, and coordinating meetings, trainings, and conferences
- Attend webinars and, when possible, meetings or briefings with criminal justice organizations and legislative bodies
Requirements
- Open to 1L–3L law students or recent graduates
- Must be enrolled at an ABA-accredited law school or have graduated recently
Preferred Qualifications
- Strong writing, research, and analytical skills
- Interest in criminal law and policy
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively
- Comfort working with diverse backgrounds
- Flexibility to handle varied tasks
Internship Details
- Duration: January–May 2026
- Commitment: Approximately 10–15 hours per week (flexible to accommodate academic schedules)
- Supervision & Mentorship: Interns will be supervised by experienced attorneys and receive mentorship from APA staff and leadership
- Learning Outcomes: Practical legal research and writing experience, exposure to national criminal justice policy, and professional networking opportunities
- Academic Credit: APA will work with your law school to meet credit requirements
- Technology: Reliable internet and a computer capable of running standard office and video conferencing software
