Essential Skills for Prosecuting Domestic Violence Cases

In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Association of Prosecuting Attorneys (APA) is pleased to provide an online, skills-based training designed to provide core skills and practical tools for effective domestic violence prosecution.

This two and a half hour, back-to-basics training will focus on fundamental aspects of domestic violence prosecution. The training will be delivered virtually to maximize accessibility and allow participants to join from across the country.

  • Duration: 2.5 hrs.
  • Fee: $100 APA Members, $150 Non-members
  • CLE: 2 hours MCLE Credit (California) | Certificates also provided for self-reporting in other jurisdictions

The training will feature two sessions:

Recantation

  • Common reasons victims recant or alter testimony
  • Pre-trial preparation strategies
  • Trauma-informed examination techniques

Forfeiture by Wrongdoing and Avoiding Revictimization

  • Legal standards, case law, and evidentiary considerations
  • Practical tips for preparing hearings and witness selection
  • Relationship to hearsay and confrontation clause issues
  • Strategies to protect victim safety
